This article is a review of a product I have been gifted, however, all opinions are my own.
Cold, wet weather and laundry just don’t go together well! Having the dryer constantly running is not good for the environment or your bank balance. Clothes horses cluttering up the house make it look untidy and feel damp. What’s the solution? I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on a Spindel – a brand new product to New Zealand – to review.
We’ve had a lot of wet weather lately. And even when it’s not been raining the air has stayed damp and cold. Not ideal weather for drying clothes. (And don’t the kids get through so much more clothing when they’re on school holidays??)
So, I’ve been very grateful that I had my wonderful new appliance for speeding up drying the washing – the Spindel.
Spindel New Zealand is a new company set up by Jayne Charles. Jayne recently moved to New Zealand from South Africa, bringing her Spindel with her. When she discovered they were not sold here she decided to set up her own company, and the first shipment is due to arrive soon. She kindly gifted me one so I could test it out and let you know what you’ve all been missing.
But what is the Spindel?
How does it help get the laundry done?
The Spindel removes moisture from your laundry by centrifugal force. The clothes spin quickly in the machine, 2800rpm to be precise, removing water which drips out the bottom.
The compact size and weight mean it is easy to position where you want it. All you need to do is plug it into the power, no need for air vents or other connections. Just don’t forget to place a bowl at the bottom or you’ll have water all over your floor!
The clothes are folded and packed tightly into the Spindel so there is little movement during the spin. This means that there is no damage to delicate fibres. (If your laundry isn’t packed tightly it will make a loud noise when spinning and you need to switch it off and repack it. The instructions warn you that you need to stay close to the appliance while it is working.)
After about 3 minutes the Spindel has done its work and removed about a cup of water.
Then you can hang your clothes up to dry quicker or put them in the dryer for a shorter time.
5 Reasons Why I love the Spindel
The clothes air dry in a fraction of the time
Since the clothes come out of the Spindel so much dryer than coming straight out of the washing machine, the clothes air dry much faster. When it’s raining I hang clothes that can’t be tumbled on a clothes horse in our garage. At this time of year (winter) the clothes take ages to dry. I’ve noticed since using the Spindel that the clothes dry much quicker and smell fresher.
I haven’t had much opportunity to test my washing outside since the weather has been bad. But, today I managed to get a load outside by 9:30 am. Even though it was cold (still frosty when I put it out) and overcast most of the day, the washing was dry when I brought it in at 2:45 pm.
The clothes will dry in a much shorter cycle in the tumble dryer
After a short spin in the Spindel, the clothes don’t need so much time in the dryer.
Don’t you find it frustrating when you go to get your washing out of the dryer and it’s still damp?
When I’ve been doing a big load of towels or bed-sheets I often notice they are still damp and have to set the dryer again (and again).
After being in the Spindel my clothes, towels and sheets have all come out the dryer dry first time! This is a great time-saver and helps me to be more productive in my day.
The Spindel is Highly Energy Efficient
As you can see from this infographic, the Spindel uses a lot less power than a dryer!
In fact, you would need to use your Spindel more than 100 times to use the same amount of power as one cycle in the tumble dryer.
No Damage to Clothing, even delicates
You don’t need to worry about fabrics. Just pack everything in! Put bigger, heavier items at the top and bottom and then pack lighter items tightly in the middle and everything should spin nicely.
Since no heat is used, any fabric which you wouldn’t put in the dryer can quite happily go in the Spindel. This was a real bonus for me. My plastic brolly sheets often come out of the machine dripping wet, and obviously can’t go in the dryer. But they can go in the Spindel – and come out nearly dry!
The Spindel does not put moisture into the atmosphere
The New Zealand climate is quite damp, and we often have problems with damp in our homes. So we don’t want to add any more moisture to the atmosphere if we can help it. If you dry your washing on a clothes horse in front of the fire the moisture from the clothes will add to the dampness in the room.
The Spindel gets rid of this extra moisture by spinning out cold water. Within three minutes a cup or two of water has been spun out of your clothes, and no dampness has been added to the air.
My Final Opinion
Well, I think it’s pretty obvious I love this product!
The Spindel does add an extra stage to the laundry task, and you do need to keep an eye on the Spindel as it works, but the washing does dry quicker so time is saved.
So, thanks, Jayne – I love it! Can you now come up with something to help me fold and put away the laundry!!
